Summerfruit Australia Limited (SAL) is the industry voice on a national and international level. It is recognised by government as the peak industry body for growers and works closely with other interested groups, government and supply chain partners to maximise profitability for the industry.
Australian summerfruit is produced in approximately 26 regions across the country, predominantly in Victoria and New South Wales, with smaller volumes of fruit grown in South Australia, Queensland and Western Australia.
Production has risen by approximately 25% over the last decade to over 112,000 tonnes per annum, produced by over 400 growers with approximately 20% of the total crop volume exported to key markets.
The Australian summerfruit industry takes great pride in producing some of the world’s best peaches, nectarines, plums and apricots thanks to Australia’s leading horticultural practices and outstanding environmental conditions. Australia’s dry climate with cool winters and controlled irrigation ensures growers can produce excellent quality summer fruit that is consistently sweet and juicy.
The many varieties of yellow and white flesh nectarines and peaches, red and black plums coupled with the diverse growing areas enable growers to export the most current optimal selection of varieties available in the world between November and April.
Australia has very strict food safety standards that apply to retail, wholesale, exporting and processing. All reputable Australian summerfruit producers will operate an independently audited HACCP-based food safety system. These systems cover all facets of production and include periodic testing of fruit to ensure it complies with maximum residue level (MRL) requirements in proposed destination markets.
